Brighton seaside with the pier
01 May

1) Brighton Sea Life Centre on Brighton’s sea front is the world’s oldest aquarium. The Brighton Sea Life Centre was originally conceived and designed by Eugenius Birch, the architect who was also responsible for the West Pier. Work on the aquarium began in 1869, the project costing £133,000 (equivalent to around £3.5 million today). The building was opened to its first ever visitors in 1872.

2) Burgess Hill used to host a Midsummer Fair – the first was in medieval times, and the last was held in 1913. Before this time it was the first sheep and lamb fair of the year in the area, and people travelled across the county to buy and sell over 9,000 sheep each year.

3) In Haywards Heath the ancient Dolphin Pub just off Muster Green is one of the oldest buildings in the town, dating from the 16th century. The pub had been named for 130 years after the Sergison family who owned huge tracts of farmland in around Haywards Heath before the modern town was built; but the pub recently reverted to its even more traditional original pub name. Great Haywards and Little Hayward are two other old and distinguished late medieval buildings in the town.

4) The Duke of York theatre is the oldest purpose built cinema in the UK. Brighton has a rich history in film with many movies and TV shows filmed here. So, it’s quite fitting that the oldest cinema should sit proudly in Brighton.

5) On 4th July 1911 Shoreham was the starting point for the first ever recorded cargo flight when Horatio Barber on his Valkyrie monoplane flew a box of Osram light bulbs which he delivered to Hove Lawns.

6) What's in a name? The Burgeys family gave Burgess Hill its name, when John Burgeys, from the area, appeared in the tax rolls – by Elizabethan times a community had established itself around the Burgeys family. It is believed that the hill on which the train station currently stands is the one referred to in the name.

7) Britain’s first ever casino was opened in Brighton and was within the Metropole Hotel. It opened with a flourish in 1962 and was not only the first casino in Brighton but it was the first on land casino in Britain too. The entrance to the casino was an experience in itself. Visitors would enter through the back of the main hall and up a newly built twin staircase decorated with wrought ironwork. A man called Peter Harrison, who was secretary at the time, recalled that around 800 people all dressed up in their sparkling evening wear would visit the casino every night.

8) Haywards Hoth dates back to 1544 meaning a "heath by the enclosure with a hedge" and Haywards Heath was mentioned during the English Civil War in early December 1642 - Muster Green was the place where local Parliamentarians defeated the High Sheriff of Sussex who was advancing his Royalist troops from Chichester who had come up through Lewes.

9) The area around Wivelsfield railway station is known as World’s End. It has been this way since 1899, when a serious train accident occurred after a red signal was obscured by thick fog and two trains collided.
